The Indiana Leadership Prayer Breakfast, “The Governor’s Prayer Breakfast,” is presented in the same spirit as the National Prayer Breakfast. The prayer breakfast idea developed out of weekly prayer groups in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. These groups have been meeting since 1941. In 1953, President Dwight Eisenhower was invited to attend the Senate group for a time of fellowship and prayer. Out of the invitation, the National Prayer Breakfast developed into an annual affair that brings together people in positions of responsibility – not only from the United States, but from many other countries. Since the initial breakfast in Washington, DC, over forty states have held their own events. Indiana’s began in 1964. The idea has also carried over to more than a thousand communities and many professional and trade associations. As a time of fellowship and prayer, it is our hope that our homes, our businesses, our local and state governments, and our individual lives will be influenced in a positive way by this breakfast.
